Philadelphia History

A Little Philly History with Jonathan Levin, Philadelphia Sports Fan

The Philadelphia Eagles and the Philadelphia 76ers are both storied franchises in the NFL and NBA, respectively.

Even though the Eagles just won their first championship ring, they’ve had some downright memorable teams with names like Donovan McNabb, Brian Dawkins, Reggie White, Brian Westbrook, Randall Cunningham, and more.

Established in 1933, the Eagles happen to be one of the foundational franchises of the National Football League. They’ve won 3 championships in franchise history — but zero since 1960.

Early Eagles teams had some of the most notable and greatest Eagles players of all time — blue collar players like Steve Van Buren, Tommy McDonald, and Chuck Bednarik (now Hall of Famers).

We enjoyed the 1980s with a nice run of success which ushered us into the Andy Reid years, which were some of the best in Eagles history. During this era we won 4 NFC East titles in a row, appearing in the NFC Championship game 4 times (we were brought down by the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX — it still stings).

Our 76ers are slated to have an amazing year if everything plays out right. We have Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid, as well as even younger talent with high ceilings, not to mention vets like J.J. Reddick to anchor us. But the 76ers having some of the league’s foremost iconic talent is nothing new.

Do names like Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving, and Charles Barkley ring a bell? The 76ers enjoy a rich history both in the past and in the present. Moses Malone, Allen Iverson, and now Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid.

We’ve won 3 NBA championships — our 1st coming as the Syracuse Nationals (1955), our 2nd won by a Chamberlain-led team in 1967, and the 3rd coming in 1983 (won by an Erving and Malone-led team).

We love our 76ers despite the fact that we’ve only been back to the coveted NBA Finals once since 1983. That was back in 2001 — we were led by Iverson and lost handily to the Los Angeles Lakers in just 5 games.

At the Jonathan Levin Philadelphia sports fan site the future looks bright. Visitors can expect the latest news and rumors of the NBA and NFL, always with a Sixers/Eagles lean.
